When The Music said they were going to take the long road and walk it... no one thought it would take them quite this long. After turning grassy arenas into heaving dancefloors on the Big Day Out in 2003 (touring their self-titled debut, home to that summer’s surprise anthem, The People) and again in 2005 (then pushing album No.2, Welcome to the North), English four-piece The Music make their long-awaited return to Australian stages this July and August.

“Absence has made them stronger… it's given them the hunger back and they're becoming unstoppable.” (Leeds Music Scene, April 2008)

Indeed, after fighting through low times, Leeds lads Rob Harvey (vocals), Adam Nutter (guitar), Stuart Coleman (bass) and Phil Jordan (drums) are a band reborn. “There’s a thirst there,” agrees Harvey. “Yeah, the swagger is back!”

The Music’s new, third album Strength in Numbers – produced by Flood and Orbital’s Phil Hartnoll – demonstrates their own unity and defiance, as well as imploring individuals to connect with the world around them. It’s got sky-blasting choruses, dancefloor-friendly beats, an almighty rock groove, as well as a social conscience. “It’s about standing strong, being comfortable with yourself and realising there is a future, there is something to look forward to,” says Harvey.

The band debuted the new material – from the beat-laden Drugs to the driving No Weapon Sharper Than Will – at a series of each-bigger-than-the-last gigs across the UK earlier this year. With Harvey telling audiences “We’ve really f---ing missed it!”, The Music’s comeback was greeted “like a manic party to greet old friends,” wrote Contactmusic. “Quality music is never forgotten… While Muse are currently recognised as one of the premier live groups, it is no exaggeration to state that The Music are pushing to the same level.”

These shows found Take the Long Road and Walk It still inspiring early waves of euphoria, The People and Getaway as heady as ever, and the jungle drum crescendo of Bleed From Within inevitably causing a mass flailing of limbs.

“They mix old and new with surprising ease… The new material is different, more considered and complex. But the crowd laps it up so much that sweat drips from the ceiling like rain.” (Lancashire Evening Post, April 2008)

“I want people to feel like I do when I’m singing these songs,” says Harvey. “I want them to feel in the moment, not disconnected. It’s about bringing people together and making them feel good.”

With their “reputation as a ferocious live band, uniting seething overdrive with impassioned danceability” (Lancashire Evening Post), The Music know all about bringing the feel good factor. Feel it for yourself when The Music finally return to Australia this winter.
