Clean and Green - Recycling

Big Day Out has been running a successful recycling initiative at the Sydney shows for a number of years now. After working out the intricacies of this we are now expanding the program to all cities in the coming shows and hope to achieve up to 80% recyclability across all shows within the next 2 years.

In the Sydney site there are 5 stations that we build and they are set up close to areas that we know will generate a lot of recyclable materials.

They are timber bins 4.8m x 4.8m which are designed to flat pack for storage.

We use volunteers to work on the day to control this and they are interactive with the punters enticing them to recycle.

There are approx 50 volunteers in total split into 3 shifts.

Their roles are to man the stations and fill the supplied sulos that are stationed inside the boxes and communicate with the cleaners so that they can be replaced through out the event.

Some also go around the site picking up cans, pet ,etc.

We are lucky that our cleaning contractor is hands on with us.

They have come up with some useful ideas that make things a bit more user friendly.

They have their own sorting stations back stage and are sorting throughout the day.

The program is fully audited including times, truck registrations and photos of recycle trucks leaving the site and arriving at the recycling depot (as opposed to waste stations).
