Unless you’ve been walking around with plugs in your ears and blinders over your eyes for the past couple months, you know full well that ALABAMA SHAKES are one of the most exciting new bands in the world. And now that band is coming to BIG DAY OUT.
Formed in Athens, Alabama in 2009, Brittany Howard & co.’s fierce, soul-infused brand of rock n’ roll has been on a meteoric rise to the top. In October 2011, ALABAMA SHAKES gave a performance at the CMJ Festival in New York City that earned a glowing review from the New York Times describing the band as “a thunderbolt dressed in bluejeans,” with music that’s “aching when it’s slow and growling and whooping when it’s fast.” NPR named them one of the best bands of 2011, while MTV called them one of the top bands to look for in 2012.
With expectations at fever pitch, ALABAMA SHAKES delivered their debut album Boys & Girls and with it marked the arrival of a major new rock and roll band. Along with their explosive first single, “Hold On”, it was their soulful live show that had everyone talking, with The Telegraph saying “They can work up a booty-shaking, garage-rocking stomp or take it down to a slinky, sensuous, heartcrushing whisper and it is all achieved with nuance and understatement.”
Frontwoman Brittany Howard has a powerful stage presence that has Consequence of Sound proclaiming “Like a Southern preacher, she wagged her finger and strutted across the small stage while belting out her signature soul-drenched howl that falls somewhere between Howlin’ Wolf and Janis Joplin.”
This is ALABAMA SHAKES’ first time playing for audiences in Australia. In a sense, you won’t precisely know what you’re in for, yet we can guarantee that not a soul will leave the venue unsatisfied.
To put it plainly: believe the hype.
These shows are your only chance to see ALABAMA SHAKES outside of BIG DAY OUT 2013
